“Every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it” -Hippocrates
In this section I am going to share my inner wisdom on how BEAUTY and WELLNESS (including diet) affect our MINDS which in turn affects the planet. Everything is connected, so what we put on our skin and in our mouth affects our bodies and our minds and everything else around us.
My philosophy goes back to a few very basic principles:
- Eat what is in season where you live.
- Was it around one hundred years ago? If not, don’t eat it!
- Can I pronounce all of the ingredients? If not, don’t eat it!
- Which communities around the world are the healthiest? Follow their philosophy.
- Eat plant based as much as possible.
- If I am eating animal products (which is only eggs and occasionally dairy), are the animals humanely raised? Check to verify on cornucopia.org
We live in a world surrounded by chemicals. It is almost impossible to go a day without breathing, eating, or wearing some form of toxic chemical. Therefore, I strongly believe in the power of CLEANSING. There are many different types of cleanses out there. One of my favorites is THE BEAUTY DETOX from Kimberly Snyder. You can see recipes and cleanse options on her website.
Once again, we are surrounded by chemicals and one area where we can all be a bit too trusting is in skin care products.
How is skin connected to the planet? The allowed chemicals added to skin care products ranging from SOAPS and SHAMPOOS to BEAUTY PRODUCTS are quite unbelievable. These chemicals are toxic to our bodies and to our planet. They enter your body, and when they are washed off your body, they enter the oceans.
A great resource for checking to see which PRODUCTS are safe is the Environmental Working Group. They also have an app called SKIN DEEP which is a great tool to take shopping.
Not to mention that cutting edge research is now finding out that harsh chemically based skin cleansing products are killing the good bacteria that is on our skin and in our guts (microbiomes).
Two resources to learn more about the ecosystems of our skin and the microbiomes of our guts are:
